  • I can’t believe they can show that trash, it’s disgusting. I have a 6 yr. old daughter and I’m scared to death of what she may see on television. What will be on when she’s in high school? I so agree with you!!!!!

  • Unbelievable! Well CW is crossed off my list of channels that my children can watch. So we’re down to channel 6 public television? Yippee. These television stations will do ANYTHING to compete. Including giving the impression that high schoolers are all about what your grade is in the sex department instead of in school. Parents are completely up against the wall these days trying to teach their kids to make good decisions and have good morals that they can pass on to their own kids. And we have to compete with this crap? Shame on you CW!!!

  • Like Tracy, I am not shocked by very much these days. I have two daughters, ages 21 & 23 and I would not want them watching this trash!!! Teenagers and young 20’s have a hard enough time as it is navigating thru the realtionships of high school and college with peer pressure, and too much access to inappropriate content on the internet, etc…but to have a show that targets teenagers in such an explicit manner is completely disgusting. The only reason CW2 or any other network that has this type of programming on is only doing so to compete with cable shows which are slowly driving the networks out. The sad part is that the CW always advertises as a family station…I don’t think Gossip Girl is what families should be watching. And people want to know why the world is the way it is? Look at our television programming and you can see why!

  • Personally, the ads don’t really bother me. If you’re shocked by this, you haven’t watched a daytime soap in a long time, since what is portrayed on soaps is a lot worse than these ads. Even during prime time, shows are a lot more risque than this. I have watched a couple of episodes of Gossip Girl (don’t care for the acting or writing, so it’s not “must see TV”). The show is all about the decadence of these rich kids - sort of like the movie “Cruel Intentions”. Sex isn’t the primary focus of the show, but obviously the CW is putting every sexy scene ever on the show in their ad to get people’s attention - which judging by this discussion, it did. With regard to OMFG, I think it’s blasphemous when you say OMG, so adding the F doesn’t really make it worse for me. That being said, I have to admit that the word represented by the letter F has slipped past my lips every now and again, so I’m not hypocritical enough to be shocked by it. I understand that people with young children might be upset if their children read it, but I’m guessing a lot of kids already know what the F means.

  • You know.. It’s one thing to show this stuff on T.V. and I understand it’s our prerogative to watch it or not, but when they show a trailer during regular shows and at times when the young ones are likely to be watching, I have a problem with that.. How are we suppose to choose whether or not to watch a commercial.. I also have a problem with the Viagra and Cialis commercials.. have you seen those lately.. holy moly.. I don’t need to explain male erectile dysfunction to my 10 year old boy, do I?? Why should he have to see those.. the least they could do is show them after 10pm or midnight, or something … it’s ridiculous .. !!

  • Jennifer- Yes most kids already know what the “F” means, and they are taught NOT to use it. So when you sit down with your family to watch television and OMFG is repeatedly displayed across your screen in big bold letters, it makes it look like parents are wrong. Because after all, it’s on TV so it MUST be okay or they wouldn’t put it on there. You’re right about the soap opera’s though. During the summer months my kids caught a glimps of two men having sex on Passions. Needless to say, the TV was off for the remainder of the summer.

  • Terri,

I understand your point. But I also think it’s a parent’s job to let their kids know that just because someone on TV says or does something, that doesn’t mean it’s right (just like using the F word isn’t right). They need to learn that because it is on TV, it isn’t necessarily OK. Let’s face it, there is no way to entirely protect children from seeing or hearing things you don’t want them to. The best thing to do is teach them right from wrong and tell them “listen, I know the CW showed that ad, but this is why it’s wrong”. Kids are smarter than people give them credit for. I think if you teach them your values, they’ll get it. I truly don’t believe that violence and sex in TV or movies is the reason the world is in the mess it is. I think it’s because a lot of parents don’t talk to their kids about values. My parents instilled in me a good sense of values. When I was growing up, despite what I saw on TV or movies, or what some singer said, I never took drugs, smoked, or slept around. I don’t think what you see or hear can affect you unless you haven’t been given a good sense of values to begin with. It all starts at home with good parenting. Just my 2 cents.

  • Maybe I’m jaded, but what’s the big deal? I was watching when they censored Elvis’ hips and that seems pretty silly now doesn’t it?

  • Very true! Parents have to talk to their kids. I’m just disturbed when they see something on TV that I have to explain to them before it’s what I believe to be the right time (or age) to do so. My parents did a good job as well when I was growing up. But I know how powerful peer pressure is as I gave into it on more than one occasion. Then learned the hard way what my parents were telling me in the first place. We want (and try so hard) to do a good job raising our kids. These programs and commercials just don’t make it any easier. That’s all.

  • This is just another example of how sex-oriented our society is. The best weapon against anything you don’t like in this country is to hit it where it hurts. In this case, if people don’t watch, they don’t get sponsored. They don’t get sponsored, they’re off the air. Remember folks. This trash and others like it are on the air (cable or network) because it sells. People are watching it! Therein lies the root of the problem. Sadly, the immoral are starting to outnumber the moral.

  • This concept was appalling enough just as a book series targeted at young adult readers, I cannot even imagine it being televised to a much younger audience! >.<
In any circumstance it goes back to the parents needing to step up and supervise their children. It isn’t about being ‘Buddies’ with your kids, it’s about being a Parent. Whether it be books, television, or music just as you would expect to supervise your child’s whereabouts.
I must admit I gave my parents a ride for their money, but when I pushed they always pushed back. The line between friend & enforcer was never blurred and I am grateful for that, I was taught to be an adult & to have common sense. Growing up everything I was exposed to was monitored, Kool 105 & Classical music was all I listened to until I was in my teens! ^.^
When I reached the age where my own distinct personality started to develop & my tastes in music/appearance turned to the darker or ‘macabre’ sense, my parents made sure to listen to the music, or read the books I bought & gave me feedback on what they thought was a bit too advanced for my age & removed it.
I am a pretty well adjusted adult now, can proudly say I was never exposed to drugs or other such events kids half my age are getting into nowadays & am also happy to be part of an organization for kids like myself, where we host alternative gore-hop/metal music shows, wrestling events, as well as barbeques with free food, Faygo & contests.
All else I can say about this matter is it’s not up to these television/music companies to care about what your children are exposed to or to what lengths you must go to protect them, just be open & teach your kids the skills to conduct themselves properly & hope against all hope something sticks.
In this day and age no one goes thru their adolescence unscathed.

  • Okay parents. All you need to do is teach your kids right from wrong. It’s not really shocking. Remember about a year ago when they said the S work on CSI? There are previews of dead people and blood in those previews. Why are you watching prime time with our children anyway? There are no shows on primetime on the CW that children should be watching. They don’t start to show the previews for gossip girl until 7. I must admit that I love the show. Most of it is explaining how some kids cope with the pressure of having sex in high school. There are story lines strongly focused on family issues and how to deal with divorce and the pressure to be just like everyone else. So until you’ve seen the show don’t prejudge. I wouldn’t let a child watch this show but I would also assume that most kids know what OMFG means. And either you’re using the F word or using the lords name in vain. Neither bothers me but the point is that it’s become slang.
